The Clays Lane Live Archive exhibition and event series at Supplement and the Bethnal Green Library marks the culmination of a four-year long research project by Adelita Husni-Bey, with invited curation by Shama Khanna. Working with ex-residents the live archive maps the history of the Clays Lane housing co-operative from its founding in 1982 through to its demolition in 2007 ahead of the regeneration work planned for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

July 28th Counter Olympics March in Bow!

The Counter Olympics Network staged a mass rally through Bow in East London on Saturday 28th July attended by around 1000 people bringing together over 50 organisations representing many different concerns about the Olympics, including corporate campaigns against Olympic sponsors like Dow, G4S, BP, Rio Tinto, Atos and Adidas and local campaigns over the seizure of land at Leyton Marsh, Greenwich Park and Wanstead Flats, the closure of tow paths and the placing of missiles on blocks of flats and in parks. Trade unions and campaigns against the cuts protested against the misuse of resources while representatives from NoSochi2014 and RioOnWatch made this an international occasion.

The march was followed by speeches, plays, poetry and performances, notably dancing by the Circassian NoSochi campaigners and a performance by Reclaim the Bard. The Vancouver Poverty Olympics Torch, which was kindly provided by Vancouver activists, was passed on to the NoSochi group to continue to provide a focus of protest against the bloated circus that is the Olympics.

Counter Olympics Torch Relay – Second Leg – A Beautiful Day!

This historic and iconic Counter Olympics Torch Relay completed its milestone second leg, this time around Hackney before ending at Leyton Marsh. The torch, sent by Vancouver Counter Olympics protesters, will shortly depart with the NoSochi2014 team to continue its epic journey around the world representing hope for all those for whom the Olympics has become a symbol of repression, eviction, greed and arrogance.

Final arrangements for march and event on July 28th

To provide clarity on present arrangements: it has now been agreed we should be allowed to use Bow Road for the march, and the authorities will manage the situation should the Alternative Olympic Route in Bow Road come into effect. Assemble at 12noon on the Millennium Bridge, which crosses Mile End Road and is in Mile End Park just west of Mile End tube station. Tower Hamlets has also modified its line on the use of Wennington Green, so we will be holding a post-march event there as planned. So for anyone thinking of going to the end point, go to Wennington Green not Victoria Park as Tower Hamlets refused to allow us to use Victoria Park.

Mile End is on the Central, District and Hammersmith & City lines. For disability access there is no lift at Mile End Tube. Buses to Mile End are 25, 205, 425, 339, 277, D6 and D7. To get to Wennington Green the nearest tube is Mile End and buses are 8, 425, 339, 277 and D6.

We see no reason why there should be any difficulties which might require the authorities to intervene in a peaceful march or a family friendly event which will include children’s face painting as well as speeches. We believe the very substantial body of opinion which is unhappy with the Olympics should be allowed to express itself on this march and in Wennington Green just as those who wish to watch the Games on the big screens will be free to enjoy Victoria Park.

Counter Olympics Torch Relay – 2nd Leg – Hackney: Clissold Park to Leyton Marsh

We are proud to announce the second leg of the historic Counter Olympics Protest Torch Relay which will be run on Friday 27th July. The iconic Vancouver Poverty Olympics Torch will make its journey around the streets of Hackney starting from the cafe in Clissold Park, Stoke Newington Church Street and ending at Leyton Marsh, the scene of recent ODA depredations. The relay is dedicated to those who were imprisoned and who received ASBOs, fines or restrictions on their movements in response to their peaceful attempts to prevent the ODA and Waltham Forest Council breaking planning law.

The relay will start at 2pm from the cafe in Clissold Park and will take approximately one hour to complete its journey to Leyton Marsh where it will be welcomed by Save Leyton Marsh campaigners. Anyone planning to participate should aim to arrive at the cafe at 1.30pm. If you are travelling by public transport the best bus to get to Clissold Park is the 393 which goes past Highbury and Islington Station The route for the relay will run along Stoke Newington Church Street, Stoke Newington High St and Road, Kingsland High Street, Dalston Lane, Amhurst Road, Mare Street, Richmond Road, London Fields, Broadway Market, Tow Path to Victoria Park, Lauriston Road, Well Street, Morning Lane, Ponsford Street, Homerton High Street, Brooksby’s Way, Chatsworth Road, Lea Bridge Road, Middlesex Wharf to Leyton Marsh.

Come and cheer the runners as they pass your street!
